Semarang.

A land suitability case study.

Our team used the SuitAblity Tool to identify the best location for future affordable housing projects in Kota Semarang, Indonesia. Areas safe from natural hazards were prioritized, and the ones that are part to land subsidence, landslides and flooding were discarded, which is particulary relevant considering that Semarang disaster-prone context. These results were compared to the affordable housing projects developed in the city in 2016 and 2017 to assess how "suitable" their locations were.

The figure shows, highlighted with dark green, where the most "suitable" locations for a housing project are. This analysis shows that the vast majority of newly built social housing units are located in "unsuitable" or "low-ST index" locations; most of them were developed in red areas.
